The Most Common Residential Plumbing Emergencies

Some of the most common plumbing issues that need the attention of a plumber include gas leak clogged pipes, damaged pipes that could be because of the incorrect pipe installation. The irony is that homeowner right from the beginning can prevent such plumbing issues. General protective maintenance in your home’s plumbing, will not only keep plumbing fixtures in good condition for a long time, but allows you to spot early problems before they get worse. When faced with an emergency plumbing state, there are a few things that you can do to make it manageable. Below are some of the plumbing issues.

1. Burst pipe – the first thing to do is to stop the water from leaking as you wait for the plumber. Locate the main shutoff valve to your house and close it. Making sure that the taps are turned off will ensure that the water is not flowing thus avoiding flooding. Allow cold water to run through the pipes that way you will allow the pipes drain the trapped water.

2. Solid pipes- When the water in pipes freezes the pipes will expand, which could rip open the pipe. Shut down the main valve. If the content in the pipes has not started spilling, you can use some hot water bottles to melt the frozen water by fixing the bottle at the pipe nearest to the tap. The melting process should be gentle, do not use a naked flame as this could cause thermal water expansion that can split the pipe.

3. Blocked drains and toilets – Try to lift the obstruction by means of a plunger. If this fails, you can call help from a plumber. Some of these blockages are mostly caused by incorrect pipe installation or draining substances that should not go through the drainage for example nylon papers.
